Devkant Sharma, a motorcycle rider, lost his life in Gurugram after a car door swung open unexpectedly, leaving his companion, Ganesh Jha, injured in the incident.
A tragic accident on Golf Course Road in Gurugram claimed the life of a 43-year-old motorcycle rider, while another person was injured. As the motorcycle was navigating past a halted vehicle, the driver suddenly opened the driver-side door, leaving the rider with no opportunity to avoid or slow down in time.
The victim has been identified as Devkant Sharma, while the injured individual is 42-year-old Ganesh Kumar Jha, who was operating the motorcycle at the time of the incident. Sharma was riding as a passenger. Both men were employed at a management firm located in Sector 56. The tragic event occurred in the underpass near Genpact Chowk on Saturday evening, between 6 PM and 6:30 PM, as they were heading home. Jha, a resident of Old Gurugram, was on his way to drop off Sharma, who lived in Delhi, at Sikanderpur Metro station.
As they entered the underpass, they spotted a stationary car near the exit. While attempting to pass it, the driver abruptly opened the door. ‘Jha, unable to slow down in time due to his proximity to the vehicle, collided directly with the door, causing both him and Sharma to be thrown from the motorcycle,’ said an investigator. Despite wearing helmets, both suffered critical head and bodily injuries
After the car fled the scene, bystanders swiftly moved Jha and Sharma out of the fast lane and called for an ambulance for Sharma, who was bleeding profusely. He was transported to a hospital in Sector 43, where he tragically passed away from his injuries in the emergency ward at 10:45 PM.
Jha lay unconscious on the road for several minutes while bystanders rendered aid. Once he regained consciousness, he made his way to the same hospital for treatment related to his damaged motorcycle, according to police reports. ‘The hospital notified us about the accident and Sharma’s death at 1 AM on Sunday,’ stated Inspector Manoj Kumar, the station house officer at Sushant Lok police station.
Jha provided us with the car’s registration number, which we traced back to the Badshahpur SDM office. We are in the process of obtaining the owner’s details from the relevant authorities to apprehend the suspect. Additionally, we are reviewing CCTV footage to determine the car’s make and model,” Kumar stated.
Following Jha’s statement, a first information report was filed against the car driver at the Sushant Lok police station on Sunday evening, charging the driver under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 285 (endangering public safety) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. According to police, Jha was employed in the HR department, while Sharma served as an accountant at the same management firm.
