Raid Leads to Arrest of 3 Suspects, Massive Haul of Fake Medicines Seized

Three arrested in Gurugram raid as authorities seize counterfeit medicines worth lakhs; joint investigation launched to trace the supply chain.

When the Chief Minister’s Flying Squad, along with the Drugs Department and Crime Branch team, raided Mohammedia Pharmacy in Gurugram, chaos erupted. During this, there was widespread commotion. The team arrested three accused on the spot and seized counterfeit medicines worth lakhs of rupees. The team is now trying to determine where these medicines were being supplied.

At Mohammedia Pharmacy located in Sector 39, Gurugram, counterfeit medicine named Tofazek-5, used for arthritis treatment, was being sold under the Cipla brand. Upon receiving this information, the Chief Minister’s Flying Squad, the Drugs Department, and Sector 40 Crime Branch jointly raided the pharmacy on Wednesday. During the raid, the Director of Corporate Affairs from Cipla was also called to the spot.

Upon checking, the medicine seized from the pharmacy was found to be counterfeit. During the investigation, three accused, including the pharmacy owner and the supplier, were arrested.

The Chief Minister’s Flying Squad reported that they had been receiving information for several days that counterfeit medicines were being sold at a pharmacy in Sector 39. When the joint team arrived at Mohammedia Pharmacy, they found its owner, Yusuf, a resident of Ghaseda village in Nuh. During the inspection, the team discovered 50 boxes of Cipla’s Tofazek-5 mg tablets at the pharmacy, with each box containing 60 tablets. No bill for these medicines was found at the location.

It is worth mentioning that this Cipla medicine is used for the treatment of arthritis. Suspecting the medicine to be counterfeit, the company’s Director of Corporate Affairs was called to the spot. Upon checking, the medicine seized from the pharmacy was found to be fake.

The supply was being made according to the demand

During interrogation, it was revealed that Naseem, a resident of Sanlabha village in Nuh, was supplying the medicine to the pharmacy. Based on the information provided, a raid was conducted at a rented house in Sector 39, and Naseem was also apprehended. A total of 964 boxes were recovered from this house, with an estimated value of around 10 to 12 lakh rupees. Another associate of Naseem, Zubair, a resident of Karera village in Nuh, was also taken into custody from Sector 39. He was helping them in the supply of these medicines.

The accused are now in custody for five days as the investigation unfolds.

Three mobile phones were recovered from the accused, along with cash amounting to two lakh seventy thousand rupees from the pharmacy owner. A case has been registered at the Sadar police station under Sections 18(C), 18A, 18B, and 17B of the Medical Act and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. Yusuf and Naseem have been taken on a five-day remand after being presented in court, while Zubair has been sent to Bhondsi Jail.

Inspector Amit, in charge of the Sector 40 Crime Branch, stated that the accused will be questioned to find out where these counterfeit medicines are produced and where they are being supplied. Samples of the medicines will be sent to the lab for testing. The Drugs Department will seal the medical store and initiate action to cancel their license. The entire case is being investigated by the Drugs Department.
