GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority)
The installation of new smart traffic signals at 21 intersections in the city has been completed under the Smart Traffic Signal Light project. These signals are integrated with vehicle detector cameras and linked to the GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority) command center.
The trial run from the command center has been successful, and physical trials are set to take place soon.
The smart signals will adjust based on vehicle pressure at intersections. It is expected that this system will significantly improve the city’s traffic management. Colonel R.D. Singhal, the General Manager of GMDA’s (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority) Mobility Division, confirmed that the vehicle detector cameras at the 21 intersections have been successfully integrated with the GMDA’s command center.
The system has already been tested, and it was found that when there was a long line of vehicles in one direction, the signal automatically turned green in that direction.
In addition, vehicles were able to pass smoothly from one signal to another without any interruptions. The system will now undergo real-world testing at ground level, with preparations already in progress.
GMDA is also working on integrating cameras at other intersections with the command center. Once the entire system is fully operational, it may also be integrated with a mobile application.
This could make it easier for emergency vehicles like ambulances to pass through intersections without delay. CCTV cameras have already been installed at all major intersections.
Additionally, GMDA is working to improve traffic management across the city by equipping traffic signals from Sector 1 to Sector 55 with Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) technology.
This system will include vehicle detector cameras that will enable smart signals to measure traffic volume at intersections. These signals will automatically adjust their timing and extend green light duration to ensure smoother traffic flow.
The new system will also prioritize emergency vehicles by creating green corridors, allowing them to pass without delays.
Pedestrian traffic signals will also be installed at busy junctions to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians. GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority) is already upgrading existing traffic signals across the city, including 111 signals in Sector 1-55, which are being converted into smart signals.
Some of the key locations where these upgrades have been made include IFFCO Chowk, Fire Station, Hong Kong Bazaar, CRPF Camp, Nirvana Country, Z-Chowk, Kanhai Mod, Wazirabad Chowk, Sector 56, Subhash Chowk, Galleria Market, Krishna Chowk, Kanhai Village, Ambedkar Chowk, Mayfield Garden, SS Plaza, Sector 45, and Good Earth Mall Chowk.
In addition to these, 32 smart traffic signals will be installed at intersections in New Gurugram’s sectors 58-115. These signals will improve traffic management as well as pedestrian movement in these areas.
All the signals will be integrated with GMDA’s Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) for better monitoring and management.
