Highlights:
- Initially, there was a plan to build a flyover from Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk.
- Local residents are opposing the flyover, which is why the plan has been changed.
- The construction of the 6-lane elevated road will make it easier to reach Dwarka Expressway.
To address the issue of traffic congestion from Hero Honda Chowk to Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram, a 6-lane elevated corridor will now be built instead of a flyover. The length of this corridor will be 2.2 kilometres, and it will connect Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. Beyond this point, reconstruction work on a 3-kilometre stretch leading to Dwarka Expressway has already been completed. An underpass on the Dwarka Expressway has also been constructed. However, work between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk has been stalled since 2017 due to opposition from local residents to the flyover. The six-lane elevated corridor will have three lanes in each direction and will run parallel to the proposed metro corridor, which will be constructed on the left side of the road.
According to NHAI officials, this decision was made at the request of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). GMDA had suggested that instead of a Reinforced Earth (RE) wall, a viaduct should be constructed in this section. NHAI Project Director Yogesh Tilak said, “After consulting with GMDA, we have revised the plan. As per their request, we have prepared a new plan and profile, and the final design will be completed by the end of this week.
The project was approved in 2017
In 2017, the state government approved the plan to widen the road between Hero Honda Chowk and Dwarka Expressway. The 5.6 km stretch was divided between GMDA and NHAI. GMDA has completed work on the 3-kilometre section from Umang Bhardwaj Chowk to Dwarka Expressway, while NHAI has completed the underpass work on Dwarka Expressway. However, work on the 2.2-kilometer section from Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk has not yet started.
The Project Has Been Stalled for a Long Time
This project is funded by GMDA, while the responsibility of providing land for the 2.2 km stretch was assigned to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HSVP). Initially, NHAI had proposed expanding this section to six lanes, with work scheduled to begin in 2019. However, it was later merged with the Gurugram-Pataudi-Rewari Highway project, which delayed the start of work until November 2021, with a final deadline set for November 2023.
Increased Demand for the Elevated Road
In 2022, Gurugram MP and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh demanded the construction of an elevated road between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, a proposal supported by RWAs and industrial organisations. However, after the approval of the metro expansion plan, there was confusion regarding the project. It was undecided whether ground-level redevelopment should be done, metro pillars should be constructed alongside the elevated road, or a double-decker structure with both the elevated road and metro on a single payer should be built. In November last year, NHAI halted the project until the design was finalised and withdrew the work from the contractor. However, earlier this year, it was decided that NHAI would complete the project.
